Penny Ice Fund Reaches Total Of $31 Today
Cross babies and feverish bed-worn persons are difficult problems these days. But imagine trying to care for these persons without even the convenience of ice.
To take care of situations In homes where there is not sufficient in some to buy ice, Arkansas City s again conducting its annual ice fund and deliveries are being made daily by the Salvation Army. Everyone’s help is needed to keep this worthy project going. Won’t you give? If you haven't much money give a dime today and contribute again later if you can. But keep the contributions coming in, as there is no let up in the heat and the need is great. Donations can be made at the Salvation Army hall, the Home National Bank and The Traveler office.

Need $250 For
Penny Ice Fund
Until Autumn
—
It will take about $250 to provide the city’s needy with ice for the entire summer, Capt. Leon Geer of the Salvation Army has estimated. With the fund on hand less than $70, contributions are needed badly. Contributions have dropped off the past few days and today’s sole donation is 50 cents from “a friend.”
The boxing match Thursday night and the softball games Friday night are expected to shoot the fund close to the $200 mark but steady contributions will be needed to guarantee the fund.
As the softball game Friday night is a regularly scheduled game some persons who have season tickets have asked if these tickets will be accepted. It would be greatly appreciated if all persons attending will pay 10 cents admission as all the money is going toward the ice fund. However, season tickets will be accepted.
The V. F. W. drum and bugle corps is traveling to Blackwell and Ponca City tonight in the new Chilocco bus to advertise the boxing match Thursday night. The match is between the Shidler boxing club and Chilocco’s club which starts Saturday on an eastern trip to stage boxing matches in Davenport, Moline, Chicago and Peoria.
REHABILITATION URGED.
New Relief Measures Recommended at Meeting of Workers.
------7-19-34
The Cowley county relief force heard discussions on methods of handling relief work at a meeting of relief workers held last Thursday in Wichita. Special emphasis was placed on homestead rehabilitation and water conservation.
It was suggested at the meeting that where there are rural families, either farm owners or tenants on relief, additional aid may be granted for improvement of homes, out-buildings, wells and fences. The building of ponds and lakes was also suggested as a means of rehabilitation for Western Kansas counties where the drouth has been severe and where aid is being granted.
The meeting was conducted by John A. Stutz of Topeka, federal emergency relief director for Kansas. It was learned that plans are now being considered to make recipients of relief self-sustaining.
Another Softball Game For the Ice Fund Friday
Another 100 per cent benefit softball game will be played here Friday night at the athletic park. The proceeds will all go to the penny ice fund and are expected to guarantee the fund for the remainder of the summer.
Winfield and Arkansas City teams are pitted against each other in two games that should be among the best of the season. The A. C. Dairies and Armour’s of Winfield will play “a grudge game.” The teams of Ranney’s and the Chevrolet Motor Company of Winfield will play the other game.
The ticket sale will be conducted by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Every member will participate in the sale and it is expected to go over 100 per cent.
Ice fund donations so far total $168. Recent contributions include: $3, a friend; $1, ladies auxiliary of the A. T. A.; 50 cents, a friend; 55 cents, the Lincoln Park Needle club; money paid Saturday by those receiving ice, $1.72.
